About the Event
The opening number is the audience’s doorway into your show, and the world you’ve created. Composer Lucy O’Brien will take you on an exploration of different ways to open a musical, beginning with re-listening to old favourites, and to lesser-known productions. Lucy will break down some of the many choices involved in how to begin the show; the nuts and bolts that can be conveyed in that one song, and how to draw your audience into the world of your show. You’ll collaborate, writing an opening song to a well-known story together. The opening number sets our audience’s journey in motion, and Lucy has an innate understanding of dramaturgy making her the perfect guide to this all-important moment in the journey of your show. The session is practical, fun and suitable for writers of all levels. It’s also a great chance to meet and network with fellow musical theatre writers.
